Real pizza talk from a local

If you’re coming to Bolivia and craving pizza, don’t expect the exact same pie as back home,Bolivian pizza often has a thicker crust and generous toppings. That’s not necessarily a bad thing! One of my favorite places in La Paz is Da Vinci near Plaza San Francisco. Their pesto chicken pizza is surprisingly good and pairs great with a cold Paceña beer.

Also, keep in mind many places don’t get busy until late evening, after 8 or 9 pm. If you’re hungry earlier, markets like Mercado Campero in La Paz offer quick pizza slices that are tasty and super affordable. Try them with a fresh jugo (juice) for a real local combo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some common questions about pizza places in Bolivia, answered like a local.

Pizza is definitely popular, especially in bigger cities like La Paz, Santa Cruz, and Cochabamba. You won’t struggle to find a spot, but expect to see some Bolivian twists on the toppings and styles.
Some places try to keep it traditional, especially Italian-run spots in La Paz, but many Bolivian pizzerias mix local ingredients. If you want classic thin crust and basic margherita, ask locals for recommendations to avoid the heavier versions.
Beyond the usual cheese, tomato, and ham, you might find pizzas topped with things like llama meat, chorizo, or local cheeses. Some spots also offer more common favorites like mushrooms and peppers, but it’s fun to try the local flair!
Both work well, but many pizzerias in Bolivia only open in the evenings, so if you want to grab a quick slice during the day, markets and street vendors can be great. Restaurants tend to be more relaxed and better with drinks.
In La Paz, Zona Sopocachi is where you’ll find some chill spots with good pizza. Santa Cruz’s Equipetrol area has some trendy pizzerias too, definitely check those out if you’re around.
