Description

Day 1: La Paz – Paso Zongo – High Camp
Drive approximately 1.5 hours from La Paz (3,600 m) to Paso Zongo (4,700 m). Have lunch at a mountain refuge, then trek 3 to 4 hours up a rocky path to high camp (5,150 m), located at the base of the glacier. Prepare your gear for the next day’s climb, rest, eat dinner, and spend the night at the refuge.

Day 2: High Camp – Summit – High Camp – La Paz
Begin early for a 9 to 13-hour climbing day. Equipped with crampons and warm clothing, follow a glacier trail with two steep sections. The first challenging section, Pala Chica (5,600 m), features a 10-meter ice and snow wall. Continue ascending to the summit at 6,088 meters, then descend the same route back to high camp for a short rest and gear packing. Return to base camp to catch transport back to La Paz, arriving at the original meeting point after about an hour’s drive.

  • Provided equipment: double mountaineering boots, ice axe, crampons, harness, insulated jackets and pants, thick gloves, balaclava, gaiters, helmet, headlamp (batteries not included), ropes, and climbing protection
  • Cetazolamide (Diamox) recommended at 125 mg morning and evening before the climb
  • Guide to climber ratio: 1:2 for shared groups; 1:1 for private guiding
  • Guide tipping suggested at 15–20% of the tour cost
  • Bring a 50-liter backpack and a sleeping bag rated for –10°C
