Description

Discover the Cordillera de los Frailes on a full-day guided hike from Sucre. Visit the colonial chapel of Chataquilla, see the cave paintings at Pumamachay and Incamachay, and enjoy a vegetarian lunch in the Jalqa community of Tumpeca. Start the day with a pickup from your accommodation in Sucre at 7:00 AM. Travel to the Cordillera de los Frailes, where you visit the colonial chapel of Chataquilla, a meeting place for the Jalqa community. Then, begin the hike, enjoying stunning views of the area. Pass by impressive geological formations, where you can observe the local flora and pine forests. After 2 hours of walking, reach the Pumamachay cave, where you can admire the first cave paintings dating back thousands of years. Continue walking for about 30 more minutes to reach Incamachay, where you find the second cave paintings and observe the traces of these ancient communities. Continue the hike towards the Jalqa community of Tumpeca, located in a valley near a river. In the Tumpeca community, have a vegetarian lunch before departing by car to visit the incredible Maragua Crater. From there, enjoy incredible views of the mountains near Sucre, which are full of colors due to the presence of different minerals. Within the crater, visit the Jalqa community of Marawa, as well as the area known as the Devil's Throat, where you can observe a small waterfall and a beautiful viewpoint of the area. Depart back to Sucre from the Maragua Crater.
