During the month of February the famous Oruro Carnival is celebrated, one of the most internationally recognized events in Bolivia. The celebration takes place on the tenth and eleventh, however, the previous days, preparations include parties where food and drink are guaranteed.
The Oruro Carnival has been declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The cultural manifestations that take place during the celebration are something you cannot miss if you travel to this country in February. Undoubtedly, it is one of Bolivia's most famous and world-renowned popular festivals.
Also in February, during the first fortnight, if you are visiting Lake Titicaca, you can attend the Feast of the Virgin of Candelaria. This celebration has also been declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Every year, thousands of Bolivians, tourists and visitors flock to the shimmering shores of the vast Lake Titicaca and the nearby town of Copacabana to celebrate this feast, which combines traditional Catholic beliefs with ancient Andean traditions.
According to folklore, the Virgin Mary is said to have saved fishermen caught in a storm on Lake Titicaca, and this celebration is to thank her. The three-day festival consists of religious processions, prayers and delicious traditional food served to pilgrims in the streets.
