Description
This tour begins at the Train Cemetery, where over 20 old locomotives and wagons rest on the high plateau’s salt flats. The railway, established in 1899, once connected Uyuni with Antofagasta and transported minerals such as tin, silver, and gold, driving industrial growth linked to Huanchaca silver mines.
Next, you visit Colchani, 23 km from Uyuni, known for its salt factory and craft shops. Here you can buy souvenirs made from salt and llama or alpaca fibre.
Enter Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt flat in the world. You will see salt piles and observe salt extraction methods. The tour continues to Ojos del Salar, where water movement and gas emissions are visible. At Playa Blanca, visit the Salt Hotel or Museum, view international flags, and the Dakar monument where lunch is served. Then head to the salt flat’s center, ideal for perspective photography.
Incahuasi Island offers a one-hour hike among ancient giant cacti with panoramic views of the salt flat. The Coral Window is also visible here. Note that visits to this island may depend on the rainy season. The tour ends with sunset viewing near the salt flat's edge before returning to Uyuni around 20:00. Drop-off is available at the airport, hotel, or bus station.
