Description
The climb starts less than an hour’s drive from the Cumbre Pass towards Coroico, near La Paz. Beginning beside a large reservoir, the route enters a remote mountain area. Despite being close to the city, this area remains largely unpopulated except for llamas.
Jagged, dark rocky peaks rise sharply, surrounded by fertile Andean valleys and colorful mountain lakes. The landscape is reminiscent of the Eastern Alps, but with higher peaks. The ascent is surprisingly easy due to extensive scree slopes, allowing hikers to avoid technical climbing sections.
Ascent Details
Starting past a checkpoint, the trail climbs steeply from the reservoir, shifting from a broad path to a narrow route leading right toward the pass's summit. Along the way, distinctive dark rock formations and a black rock pyramid stand out.
Higher peaks become visible during the climb, including views of many 6000m summits from Illimani to Huayna Potosí and even Sajama, over 300 km away. The descent passes a scenic mountain lake followed by a fast scree slope slide back to the starting point.
