3-Day Hike to El Choro

The trail was an ancient Inca trading route used in pre-Columbian times. It showcases the contrast between the Andean peaks and the lush green tropical forest of the Yungas.

This 3-day trek from La Paz explores diverse landscapes from high-altitude grasslands to subtropical forests, suitable for moderately experienced hikers.

Description

Day 1: Depart from La Paz (3,600 m). The drive to La Cumbre (4,700 m) takes about 1.5 hours, with a stop at La Apacheta pass. From there, descend by vehicle for approximately 1 hour from Puna grasslands to Chucura (3,650 m). After lunch, start the trek to Challapampa Camp, then continue to Buena Vista Camp, arriving around 5:00 PM or 6:00 PM. Dinner and overnight at Buena Vista Camp (2,280 m).

Hiking duration: 6–7 hours, covering 14 km (8.7 miles).

Day 2: After breakfast at 8:00 AM, hike through changing landscapes from dry terrain to subtropical environment. Cross the Chucura and Jucumarini Rivers and pass through villages such as Super Vista. End the day at Camp Sandillani (1,980 m) for overnight stay.

Hiking duration: 7–8 hours, covering 19 km (12 miles).

Day 3: After breakfast at 8:00 AM, continue hiking through the Jucumarini River Valley with abundant vegetation including bromeliads, mosses, orchids, and birdlife. After 3–4 hours, reach the village of Chairo by noon for lunch. Transfer from Chairo back to La Paz (about 4 hours), arriving at approximately 5:30 PM.
